详细说明: 28.0 mm. Edge lettered PAYABLE IN ANGLESEY LONDON OR LIVERPOOL. Thoroughly glossy and slightly mottled olive brown surfaces with some areas of deeper brown patina noted through and behind Washington's head, and in the lower reverse. Struck on a flan that was too compact for the dies, as on all seen, resulting in varying degrees of loss in the borders and legends across the issue. This is better centered than most seen with just the bases of the date digits and tops of some letters of WASHINGTON off the flan. Likely related to the small flans, this issue also comes weakly struck as the norm. We have seen only a couple that were better defined than here. This is better struck than the equally-graded Garrett coin, with excellent definition through epaulet and coat buttons, and is easily among the all-around most pleasant specimens we have seen. The patch of roughness in the left obverse field was in the die and is seen on all known. Estimates suggest that perhaps only 25 exist, and they were clearly circulated to some degree. This has long been noted a rarity among the more available <em>Guide Book</em> types. As related in our November 2019 sale, the writer of the 1890 R. Coulton Davis Collection sale stated that just four were known at the time. That piece realized nearly two times the price of the C.C.A.U.S. medal in the same auction.
