- Ex Simpson, as noted on the insert. The mint produced what we know as Proof issues since the 1820s in extremely limited numbers. As the number of coin collectors grew in the 1850s, the numbers began increasing, and in 1858, the mint started selling Proof Sets to the general public. The majority of these early Proofs offered mirrored fields, but cameo contrast was lacking on most examples. This near-GEM is a wonderful exception, with bold contrast between the highly reflective fields and thickly frosted devices. A blush of faint gold can be seen on the rims, the only color on this otherwise stark untoned example. A single mark is noted in the field just above Liberty's shoulder keeping it from a full GEM designation. Some minor lint marks, as made, are also seen, accounting for the heavy polishing the dies received before striking. The eye appeal is quite pleasing and RARE finer. The number of Proofs struck is debated, with estimates from 100 to 350. This coin was the most recent example to sell in auction, bringing $3,290 in December 2022. Prior to this coin selling, the last one brought $3,738 back in March 2012. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $4,250. PCGS has graded just three finer in the CAM designation. This is a pleasing Ex Simpson type coin that will fit nicely in any collection of Proof Seated quarters. Cert. Number 40276845 PCGS # 85554
