- 1863 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar. Proof-66 (PCGS). With the Civil War raging through its climatic third year, there was probably very little contemporary interest in proof coins even in large Northeastern cities such as Philadelphia and New York. This is understandable since the interest of the nation as a whole was riveted to the battlefields at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chickamauga and elsewhere. Perhaps in deference to this lack of contemporary numismatic interest, the Philadelphia Mint struck only 460 proof Seated dollars in 1863, a total that represents a marked reduction from those achieved in 1860 and 1861. Most of those coins seem to have been distributed, however, and the 1863 appears fairly often in today's market in grades through Proof-64 (at least "fairly often" in the context of the proof Seated dollar as a type). Very few survivors are Gems, however, the delicate, mirror finish fields easily marred by hairlines and other handling marks.<br /> A remarkably smooth looking piece, this richly toned, olive-charcoal specimen reveals no outwardly noticeable blemishes. Shimmering mint reflectivity is readily evident as the coin dips into a light, and a pinpoint strike touches all elements of the design. Condition Census.
