- 1790 Manly medal. Original dies. Musante GW-10, Baker-61B. Brass. AU-53 (PCGS).
47.9 mm. 537.5 grains. Pierced for suspension with a small hole at 12:00. There is a single shallow additional attempted puncture mark on the obverse, and two more on the reverse, with a series of tiny dents nearby. Clearly, this medal was going to be displayed, and the wear pattern illustrates that it was. Light golden surfaces with somewhat darker patina in the recesses and mild traces of oxidation. The edges are bruised all around, but not to serious distraction, and there is no other notable damage. Weakness at the lower and upper reverse but nearly all details can be discerned including Manly's signature and the date.
Though commonly seen by collectors as simply "damaged," a pierced and worn example of a laudatory medal such as this one tells a more complete story about its owner and his sentiments toward the subject. This medal was clearly not just purchased and kept as a curiosity, it was worn on someone's person, apparently for quite some time, as a daily reminder of what Washington represented or meant to them. In the context of this collection, that is an important distinction and it carries its own value.
Provenance: Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
