- Lot 82 1801 S-214 R3. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. CAC.Lustrous bluish steel and olive with traces of mellowed mint red in protected areas, especially on the obverse. No spots or stains; the only mark is a tiny horizontal nick in the field close under the end of the chin. The surfaces are satiny and the mint frost is unbroken. A very attractive cent that would qualify for gem status except for the weak strike on the bust and the opposing area at S-OF. Breen mentions this strike problem on page 614 of his large cent encyclopedia where he states "Often weak on the profile and end of drapery, lower right obverse dentils, some leaves on the right branch, S OF, and upper right border, reflecting axial die misalignment of state III." M-LDS, Breen state II late, with die clashmarks on both sides and numerous cracks on the reverse, but the rim break over RTY has not occurred. Called MS63 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors with the ANS example in the Noyes census list, his photo #21715. Bland also says MS63 and tied for finest known with the ANS piece. Our grade is MS63. The obverse of this cent is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents. A beautiful cent, the finest available to collectors, and it comes with an important provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer and the only MS graded at PCGS.(PCGS # 36239) Value $20,000 - UP Ex Howard R.
