- 1879 Pattern Washlady Half Dollar. Judd-1598, Pollock-1792. Rarity-6+. Proof-66 RB (NGC). The obverse features Chief Engraver Charles Barber's Washlady motif with a head of Liberty facing to the left. Liberty is wearing a headband inscribed LIBERTY and ornamented with ears of wheat, cotton leaves and bolls. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is above, the date 1879 is below and 13 stars are arranged at the border seven left, six right. On the reverse a spread-wing eagle clutches an olive branch in its left (facing) talon and a bundle of three arrows in its right (facing) talon. The Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is present in the field immediately above the eagle. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above and the denomination HALF DOLLAR is below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.<br /> A richly original and highly attractive specimen, both sides retain considerable pinkish-rose color beneath an overlay of well-blended, sandy-tan and copper-brown patina. Fully struck and expertly preserved--easily among the finest examples of this popular named pattern type that this cataloger has seen in recent years. A rare type with no more than 15 pieces believed to exist.
