- 1879 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Proof-67 Cameo (PCGS). An impressive Gem of the finest order with frosty motifs and mirror fields that are wholly deserving of the Cameo designation. The strike is as bold as should be expected, and the eye appeal is likewise substantial. The central obverse features are aglow with deep and rich champagne-gold brilliance, with concentric halos of deep sunset orange, bright violet, and deep electric blue cascading outward to the rim. The reverse is a study in varied champagne tones. One of 1,100 proofs of the date struck. From 1879 onward until the close of the series, no branch mint issues were struck, and the circulation strike mintages of the dates in that span were tiny by comparison to preceding years, ranging from a low of 4,400 to a high of 12,001 pieces; the only variance from that range is the terminal date, 1891, which saw a production run of 200,000 pieces. The production of Morgan dollars was paramount to the mints in Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Carson City during the era, and circulation strike minor coinage was given short shrift. With these figures in mind, it is easy to see why many collectors choose proofs of the era to add to their collections. As for the present beauty, you won't find a finer Cameo Proof of the date in a PCGS holder, so please bid accordingly.
