- FROM THE TRZASKA COLLECTION This is a stunning SUPERB GEM, tied for FINEST GRADED at PCGS in the CAM designation. The mint began striking nickels in 1866, and the original James Longacre design shows the Union shield on the obverse and a large 5 in a ring of 13 stars, with rays between. The copper nickel alloy proved very difficult to strike, the dies broke quickly and in 1867 the reverse design was changed. The present example is very high end. Watery mirrored fields are smooth and icy. The lower obverse is crumbling, evidence of the difficulty the mint had producing this new denomination. All the devices are razor sharp in strike and stand out with a stunning contrast against the mirrored fields. A dusting of pastel iridescent gold really adds to the originality and high end visual allure of this Premium Quality beauty! Only 600 Proofs were struck. PCGS 4, NGC 11, CAC 2. No CAC approved example has ever sold in auction. A PCGS-graded example without CAC sold for $12,925 in the 2015 ANA auction. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $18,000. Only one coin is finer, A PR67 DCAM from the Just Having Fun Collection sold back in November 2013, which realized $41,125. This exceptional GEM is worthy of a world class collection of Proof nickels. Cert. Number 83064559 PCGS # 083817
