- 1860-O Liberty Seated Half Dime. V-2. MS-66 (PCGS).
Iridescent powder blue, golden-apricot and pale rose highlights blend with dominant pearl gray patina on both sides of this richly original Gem. Eagerly sought for mintmarked type purposes, the 1860-O is the final New Orleans Mint half dime and the only one of the Liberty Seated, Legend Obverse design type. This is a conditionally scarce survivor from a mintage of 1,060,000 coins.
A particularly intriguing example from the Valentine-2 dies, the obverse exhibits pronounced clash marks with letters from the word DIME on the reverse firmly impressed across Liberty's torso, especially near the bottom of the pole. Spindly die cracks on that side extend along the top of the letters in UNITED STATES into the field above Liberty's head, and from the field before Liberty's foot to close to the border at the digit 0 in the date.
