- 1881 Octagonal 25 Cents. BG-788. Rarity-7-. Indian Head. MS-64 (PCGS).
Plain edge. Deep golden surfaces exhibit olive highlights and lively luster that plays across heavily frosted devices and fully reflective fields. The strike is bold throughout. Boldly repunched C in CAL on reverse. One of Herman J. Brand's San Francisco "maverick" varieties. According to the Breen-Gillio reference, this variety is "a mule using the obverse of a token reading 1/4 CAL*GOLD, Burnie-S16, an unlisted variety, and the old reverse 780 from 1876." PCGS suggests that just eight or nine examples of the variety are known, but their on-line Population Reportlists 10 grading events, while the NGC site lists a solitary specimen for a total of 11 events. Evidently PCGS has seen the same piece on more than one occasion. A choice example of a known rarity in the series, and a coin that should see spirited bidding activity. PCGS Population: 5; 1 finer (MS-65).
