1801 S-219 R2 3-Error Reverse. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown.Very attractive glossy light to medium brown with darker chocolate brown and steel toning on the highpoints of the devices. Mellowed mint red shows in protected areas on the obverse and about 20% of the reverse retains some faded mint color. Mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only notable marks are a vertical nick in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon, a pair of nick-like planchet chips on the bottom of the neck and bust (as struck), and a couple very faint hairlines on the cheek. MDS, Breen state IV, with strong die clashmarks at LIBERTY and a single die crack on the reverse. Graded MS60 and finest known by a full 10 points in the Noyes census, his photo #21750. Bland says MS61 and finest known as well. Our grade is MS60+. This is the stand-alone finest example of the very popular 3-error reverse variety; a must-have for the finest "Registry" collection. The reverse of this cent is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy to illustrate the 3-Error Reverse, and both sides are plated in the 1991 Noyes reference on early date large cents. A highlight of this fabulous collection, and it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer.(PCGS # 36272) Value $175,000 - UP
