- Tompkins Die Stage 3 (late)/1, Rea et al. Die State a (late). Tompkins Plate Coin. This gorgeous piece exhibits halos of rich olive-gold and cobalt blue peripheral toning around reddish-rose centers. It is softly defined at stars 1 through 7 at left obverse, but is boldly to sharply struck elsewhere. Lustrous for the grade with a softly frosted texture.
Featuring a marriage between an obverse die seen only in this pairing and the reverse die that also appears in the 1835 B-5 and 1835 B-6 pairings, this 1835 Browning-4 is one of several scarce and conditionally challenged attributions for the issue. Survivors are particularly elusive in grades above EF and, although not specifically mentioned in either the 2008 Tompkins or 2010 Rea et al. census listings, the offered coin in PCGS AU-55 would be tied for CC#5 and tied for CC#6, respectively, were it included. Interesting middle obverse die stage between Tompkins 3 and 4, the arcing crack from the lower right border after star 13 extends through Liberty's portrait to the chin and into the field beyond, but has not yet reached star 3 or the left border.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: I was blown away by the beautiful toning on this scarce die marriage B-4 when I saw it in Dick Osburn's case at the 2005 PNNA show. From that point until now, 20 years later, I still love the coin and never gave a thought to finding a better one.
