- No Dahlonega quarter eagle from the 1850s is common in properly graded AU55 or higher, and the 1851-D is a very challenging issue high AU grades. From a mintage of just 11,264 coins struck there are likely no more than six or seven choice pieces in this grade range which is evident by the low CAC population for the issue. CAC has only approved 15 total coins with four in this grade and three finer (as of March 2022). Advanced collectors of Dahlonega quarter eagles will quickly recognize the importance of this lovely 1851-D! This quarter eagle has the old time look that many Dahlonega specialists nostalgically remember with crusty deep russet and medium green-gold color which is absolutely ideal for the issue. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are delightfully clean. A good deal of luster can be seen beneath the color, and there is dirt within the letters on the reverse. Overall the eye appeal is extremely high and dynamic making this a truly high-end coin for the date and grade.
