- 1876 Gold Dollar. Proof-64 Deep Cameo (PCGS). The 1876 is a low-mintage Gold Dollar that is rare-to-very rare in both business strike and proof formats. The proofs are very rare indeed, the original mintage amounting to just 45 pieces. (The business strike mintage for this date, incidentally, is also limited at just 3,200 coins.) The total number of proofs struck for this issue is actually the largest for any individual date from the 1870s, the reason for this probably being the Mint's anticipation of slightly greater sales during the United States' Centennial year. Attrition due to melting and loss was still high, nonetheless, and the newly updated online version of the PCGS Population Report gives an estimate of just 22-28 pieces for the number of coins extant.
Fully original with the awe-inspiring technical quality and eye appeal that this cataloger has come to expect for the issue, both sides are aglow in vivid reddish-gold color. The fields are deeply mirrored, and they also reveal a lovely "orange-peel" texture when observed with the aid of a loupe. The devices, on the other hand, are set apart with both a softly frosted texture and needle-sharp striking detail. The outward appearance is very smooth and, were it not for a touch of faint haziness over the lower obverse, this enchanting specimen may have secured an even higher numeric grade. Lovely!
