- Manley Die State 4.0. Chestnut and olive-brown patina blends nicely on hard, tight surfaces. Wispy handling marks are generally commensurate with the grade, although accuracy compels us to mention a concentration of faint scratches in the right obverse field, before Liberty's profile. The die state is advanced, swelling at upper right obverse weakening not only the letters RTY in LIBERTY, but also ICA in AMERICA on the reverse. Otherwise boldly defined for the grade with some sharper detail remaining within the tresses of Liberty's hair and much of the wreath that surrounds the denomination HALF CENT.<p>This bold naked eye variety of the 1797 half cent issue shows a full errant 1 above the primary digit 1 in the date. Closer inspection shows traces of the remaining misplaced logotype above the digits 797. Most examples of the 1797 C-1 variety were delivered between April 24 and May 3, 1797, (virtually) all of which were struck on cut down Talbot, Allum & Lee cents. The offered coin, however, reveals no trace of undertype.
