- FRANCE. Ecu d'Or, 1590-A. Charles X (1589-90). NGC MS-62.
Fr-389; Dupl-1172; Ci-1481. Charles X, uncle of the Protestant Henry IV, was the Catholic League candidate for the throne of France in the final phase of the Wars of Religion. This "écu d'or au soleil" was struck at the Paris mint in his name by the duke of Mayenne. Unfortunately for Charles's candidacy, he was a Catholic priest and a prisoner of his rival Henry and when he died in 1590, the Catholics were without a viable pretender. Well struck with nice luster and light attractive tone.
Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000.
NGC MS-62.
