Tompkins Die Stage 1/6, Rea et al. Die State b. <strong>Tompkins Plate Coin</strong>. This faintly lustrous example exhibits peripheral highlights of rose-russet to otherwise pinkish-silver and pale lilac surfaces. Well balanced Choice VF detail includes plenty of sharper definition in the more protected areas of the design. A light spot in the right obverse field readily identifies this as the Tompkins plate coin for the 1818 Browning-6 variety; the surfaces are a tad glossy in texture, but are free of significant marks. Representing the latest documented die state of this scarce Browning number, this piece exhibits an internal reverse cud at the top of the eagle's left wing, where the previous split in the crack from the first letter A in AMERICA has merged into a single break.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> Another lovely coin from the Dave Davis Collection. Dave was more widely known as a Bust dime and Bust half dollar collector (we met due to my joining the Bust Half Nut Club more than 30 years ago), but he also collected the quarters and had many nice coins.
