THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION, PART IV An EXTREMELY RARE early Proof Seated Liberty half dollar. Like all pre-1858 Proofs, a small, number of examples were struck, today, about 10-12 examples are known, these are virtually as rare as an 1804 dollar or an 1894-S dime. Tied for FINEST GRADED at PCGS! The fields are flashy and bold with a rich, watery reflection in the fields on both sides. Every detail is crisply struck with razor sharp definition. Wonderfully CHOICE surfaces show just some minor lines. Richly toned on both sides, this near-GEM is totally original. Shades of lilac, lavender, slate, olive, and tinges of old gold are splashed on the surfaces, the subtle shades really pop in a light. There are no serious contact marks or breaks in the bold reflection or on the devices. The eye appeal is truly exceptional. Ex F.C.C. Boyd Collection; World's Greatest Collection, Abe Kosoff, April 1945, lot 289; Stack's March 1965, lot 451; Armand Champa Collecion, Bowers & Ruddy, May 1972, lot 889; Terrell Collection, Bowers & Ruddy, May 1973, lot 859; unknown intermediaries; RARCOA, October 1996, via private treaty to Eugene Gardner; Heritage's sale of the Gardner Collection, Part III, May 2015, lot 98501. PCGS 3, NGC 4. What a great opportunity for the serious collector. This coin will certainly attract strong bidding activity. It has long been our opinion that these early Proofs are way undervalued in relation to their absolute rarity. As one of the FINEST KNOWN, this VERY CHOICE example is worthy of a very strong bid. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $40,000. The most recent example to sell was the Garrett coin which is CAC-approved realizing $28,800 in November 2017. The market today is stronger for these rarities. Good luck. Cert. Number 32483035 PCGS # 6391
