- An extraordinary and rare Proof three-dollar gold piece. This beautiful Gem was last offered in Hollinbeck Coin Co.'s 216th Mail Bid Sale of February 1958, in which it was cataloged as:<p><em>1863 Perfect Brilliant Proof. Only 29 issued of which only a few are in existence today. While an equal specimen may exist, certainly no superior one can. While the </em>Standard Catalog<em> lists this date at $275; records tend to confirm that the present market value for this outstanding rarity is closer to...500.00.</em><p>The buyer out of that sale, Floyd T. Starr, paid $355.62, and also noted on the Hollinbeck lot tag that still accompanies the coin, "Best known? Proof but scratch in front of nose." It is a sign of both the keen eye for quality and quest for perfection that defined Mr. Starr as a numismatist that the two tiny, closely spaced nicks in the field just below the tip of Liberty's nose are elevated to the level of a "scratch." There are a few other wispy handling marks, most notably on the cheek and in the upper left and lower obverse field areas, but otherwise we note only trivial as-made features, none of which are worthy of individual attention. The design elements are fully impressed with a frosty texture that sharply contrasts the deep mirrored reflectivity in the fields. Vivid medium gold color overall, this is a beautiful Gem-quality specimen that stands tall among the few survivors of this rare Civil War era Proof gold issue.<p>The Proof 1863 three-dollar gold piece has a similar mintage to its Proof 1862 predecessor: 39 coins for the former, all of which were delivered on March 23, 1863. Once again, these coins were available only as part of gold and complete Proof sets. With only 14 to 16 believed extant (per John W. Dannreuther, 2018), any auction offering for a Proof 1863 $3 is a significant event. This offering of a fresh Gem Deep Cameo specimen that has been off the market for 67 years will prove irresistible to advanced Proof gold enthusiasts.
