- PHILIPPINES. Barilla, 1766. Manila Mint. Charles III. PCGS EF-40 Gold Shield.
KM-1; Basso-4; Cal-type-192#1869. A VERY RAREand somewhat crudely struck little copper coin (as is typical for the type) with slight granular surfaces, which regardless exhibits a majority of design detail and endowed with an even, dark chocolate brown patina. This relatively well preserved example is sure to attract the interest of advanced collectors of Spanish colonial or early Philippine coinage.
Aldo Basso suggests that the "BA" monogram undoubtedly signifies the word Barilla. And that there is a chance that it was derived from the 1733 and 1743 Barillas. A far inferior example graded PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details Gold Shield from our NYINC 2019 auction of the Ray Czahor collection hammered down at $4,200 plus buyers fee.
Estimate: $3,500 - $5,000.
