- 1909 United States Assay Commission Medal. Bronze. 39 mm x 55 mm, plaque. By George T. Morgan. JK AC-53b. Rarity-3. MS-65 (NGC). Rich medium brown surfaces with glints of reddish-gold, pale pink and powder blue. Smartly impressed, smooth and attractive. The United States Mint at Philadelphia struck 51 bronze and two silver medals for the Assay Commission meeting in 1909. This medal represents an historic shift in materials used by the U.S. Mint, with the introduction of true bronze alloy composed of copper, tin and zinc in place of the traditional bronzed copper. The new alloy was treated with sandblasting and displays a light red-gold patina, traces of which are still evident beneath the dominant medium brown patina on the present example.
