- This is a rare and underrated date in this high grade. The original mintage was 52,000 and the survivors are few and far between, PCGS CoinFacts estimates 125 survive in all grades. David Akers wrote: "As a date, the 1868-S is not nearly as rare as the S Mint Half Eagles from 1858 to 1867. However, above EF it is just as rare as the earlier issues..." The present example is among the dozen finest graded by NGC; indeed, NGC has graded just a single AU58+ and a single MS61 finer. This is a sharply struck example that displays full definition with just the slightest touch of friction. A rich honey gold color adorns the surfaces and is enlivened by a bold, retained luster. A few stray ticks, as normally seen, are mentioned for accuracy, but none detract from the great eye appeal. PCGS 8, NGC 10. The last one to sell realized $7,560 in June 2021; though we like the look of this one better than the Fairmont-JBR PCGS AU58 CAC that brought $9,600. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $12,500. With just two finer at NGC, we anticipate this coin will see strong bidding and will fit nicely in any set of this very challenging series!
