- 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollar. Jefferson Portrait. Proof-61 Cameo (NGC). The fields are impressively deep and mirrored across this delightful specimen, contrasting the satin-like texture that characterizes the design elements. The complexion is a bright golden-yellow color that further enhances the eye appeal. Well struck and of unmistakable Proof status, this piece is a fitting counterpart to the Proof 1903 McKinley Portrait gold dollar that we are also offering in this sale. Authorized by Congress on June 28, 1902, the gold dollars of this type were intended to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the purchase of the Louisiana Territory. The coins were issued in connection with the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held in St. Louis in 1904. Although the original intent of the Mint was to create just one design utilizing a portrait of President Thomas Jefferson, architect of the Louisiana Purchase, the assassination of William McKinley led to the creation of a second design to honor the slain president. The first examples of both types struck, and indeed the first official gold commemorative coins produced in the United States Mint, were 100 Proofs each of the Jefferson Portrait and McKinley Portrait types. These specially prepared coins were not intended for distribution to the general public but, rather, were made solely for government officials and others with close connections to the Mint or the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Given their special status and limited distribution, most Proof Louisiana Purchase Exposition gold dollars are believed to have survived to the present day, with 80 to 90 specimens of each type believed extant. These are paltry totals given current (to say nothing of potential future) demand, however, and market appearances are rare and avidly pursued at all grade levels. PCGS# 87482. NGC ID: BYMF.
