- An old friend of our firm, we first handled this regal Sandblast Proof Indian eagle in our (Bowers and Merena's) March 1988 Norweb Collection II sale, in which it was cataloged as:
1914 Matte Proof 65. One of the very finest known of this extreme rarity. The lowest mintage among Proof Indian Head eagles was registered for 1914, at which time just 50 were coined. By this point, the demand from collectors had diminished sharply, and apparently the Mint was tired of producing coins just to have them remain unsold on the shelf or recycled in the melting pot. Probably no more than 15 to 20 exist today.
More modern scholarship by John W. Dannreuther (2018) has resulted in a revised estimate of 35 to 40 coins extant, but obviously the Proof 1914 $10 remains a landmark numismatic rarity. Adding a physical description to this coin to go along with its cataloging from the Norweb sale, we note that it exhibits deep, rich, fully original color in honey-gold. The myriad sparkling facets that comprise the delicate surface texture of these Sandblast Proofs is on full display here, and best appreciated when the coin is examined with the aid of magnification. A tiny nick near the base of Liberty's neck, above the digit 9 in the date, was almost certainly acquired in the Mint, as both sides are pristine apart from a faint swirl of slightly deeper color in the lower left obverse field whose presence is the only reason why the certified grade is not Proof-66, if not Proof-67. With only a single specimen certified finer by PCGS, at Proof-67, the Norweb specimen remains one of the absolute best Proof 1914 Indian eagle available to advanced gold enthusiasts. Its offering in this sale will result in spirited bidding and strong competition.
