- PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, 1828. Manila Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS VF-30.
KM-28; Basso-52; PNM#6-2; PNM#16-7; PNM#21-I-21; Cacho-Unlisted. Issued by decree of 13 October 1828. Type I Manila Overstrike, with serrated boarders and reverse legend; dies prepared by Don Benito de los Reyes. Overstruck on an 1825-Do RL Mexico Republic 8 Reales. A RARE, popular and heavily sought-after type and mint for this series with few examples documented. We have just over 30 examples of this host recorded and only three for this date from this mint. The central strike is strong with complete "Manila" and date and nearly complete arms of Spain. Remnants of the serrated border are noticed above "Manila" between 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock leaving much of the original design intact and clear. The surfaces are relatively smooth with only minor marks or abrasions one would normally associate with the grade displaying light attractive gray patina. A pleasing example of the type that is sure to add depth to the next collection it enters.
It is interesting to note that the most prominent hosts for the 1828 overstrikes are those of the Republic of Peru from either Lima or Cuzco, though the Cuzco issues are bit scarcer and more popular. However, Mexican hosts make up less than 20% of the known recorded examples from this series.
Estimate: $7,000 - $9,000.
