- Tompkins Die Stage 3/4, Rea et al. Die State c. <strong>Tompkins Plate Coin</strong>. Among the finest known for this scarce and conditionally challenged die pairing, although not listed in either the 2008 Tompkins or the 2010 Rea et al. census listings. Both sides are warmly toned in dominant steel gray with lighter pewter outlines to the peripheral design elements, the latter associated with remnants of mint luster. Nice, universally bold EF detail throughout. Struck from the late, lapped state of this die pairing, the only clashing that remains bold are the bars at Liberty's ear at central obverse. The reverse crack at the letter N in UNITED is sharp.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> One of my earliest Bust quarter purchases, and bought as a type coin. It is a wholesome example of this very scarce die marriage. At one time I let Mike Clark talk me into selling it to him and I regretted it immediately! Eventually he sold it back to me and until now I had no intention of ever letting it go again.
