- 1879 Seated Liberty Half Dollar. Proof-67 Cameo (PCGS). CAC. Secure Holder. The priority that Morgan Dollar production had with the Mint during the 1880s combined with the release of earlier-dated coins that had been hoarded during the Civil War resulted in limited deliveries of Seated Half Dollars beginning in 1879. The original delivery of this issue is a mere 5,900 pieces, 1,100 coins of which are proofs. Extremely rare as a Superb Gem, this delightful specimen is tied for finest-certified honors at PCGS with only four other Proof-67s (three with all-brilliant surfaces and one with a Deep Cameo finish).<br /> This cataloger cannot recall ever having handled a proof 1879 Seated Half with such strong technical quality and eye appeal as this beautiful piece. Both sides are silky smooth in sheen with nary a detracting blemish in evidence. The centers are radiant and fully brilliant, the peripheries ringed in halos of intensely vivid reddish-russet and, to a lesser extent, cobalt-blue colors. Deeply cameoed in finish, with needle-sharp devices and a simply jaw-dropping appearance. Worthy of a premium bid!
