- Tompkins Die Stage 2/1. A wonderfully original example of this dramatic die pairing in the Draped Bust half dollar series. The peripheries are ringed in halos of iridescent powder blue that frame rose-red and silver gray centers. Due to sharp obverse die cracks, strike detail is always compromised on late stage examples of this Overton number. Here we see the usual softness on that side, most notably at star 11 and on the ribbon ends behind Liberty's head. The balance of that side is suitably bold, however, and the reverse is sharper overall with minimal softness in and above the center, but not to the point where any major design elements are seriously affected. With nice frosty luster remaining to minimally marked surfaces, this is a beautiful near-Mint early half dollar irrespective of date or die pairing.<p>This is the single finest example of the attribution known, and it sits comfortably at the top of the Condition Census above an AU-50 at CC#2, followed by a small number of Choice EFs. One of several highly significant offerings in this sale for advanced early half dollar variety enthusiasts, this unrivaled and unsurpassed 1806 O-112 belongs in the finest cabinet, in which it will serve as a leading highlight.
