- 1875 Shield Nickel. MS-66 (PCGS). CAC. Direct lighting calls forth delightful bulls-eye toning in pastel golden-apricot and powder blue iridescence. Both sides are lustrous and smooth with a billowy satin texture to the finish. The United States Mint at Philadelphia produced 2,097,000 nickel five-cent pieces for commercial use in 1875. Enough Mint State coins have survived to make the issue plentiful by the standards of the Shield series. This is clearly one of the finest certified survivors, however, which confirms its rarity and desirability in today's highly competitive numismatic market.
