- Medium silver-gray throughout with attractive steel highlights gathered at the peripheries. No disturbances of any size attract the unaided eye though some minor marks become apparent under low magnification; all of them are trivial in nature and easily acceptable for the grade. The 1872-CC -- along with its 1871-CC, 1873-CC Arrows, and 1874-CC counterparts – is among a group of dates this writer frequently refers to as the “big four” in the Liberty Seated dime series. Each of these four dates begins the climb up the Red Book value column at four figures for G-4, and it only escalates from there. There are other greatly prized dates in the series, of course, but only these first four Carson City dimes have such a high expressed value in the lowest referenced grade column. Only 35,480 examples -- $3,548 face value – of the date were produced and survivors from that production run are downright rare, right from the AG-3 grade up to the Mint State range. Worthy of solid bidding support.
