- Offered is a desirable Choice EF example of this scarce and challenging transitional issue in the early dollar series. Generally warm pewter gray in appearance, the surfaces reveal a light intermingling of golden-olive toning to the persistent viewer. Well defined for the grade, if a tad softly struck on the high points of the eagle, the surfaces are pleasingly smooth during in hand viewing. BB Die State III, Salyards Die State III.
From the final year of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle die combination, examples of this die variety are thought to have been struck April 1, 1798, and delivered on April 4 (per Harry E. Salyards, 2022). The BB-82 attribution is unique to the Small Eagle, 13 Stars on Obverse Guide Book variety, and it is scarce in numismatic circles with Salyards accounting for only 200 to 450 survivors in all grades. Typically found at EF-40 or lower levels of preservation, we note that just 30 grading events have occurred for the 13 Stars on Obverse variety in EF-45 in the PCGS Population Report, with only 27 grading finer, of which just two have been called Mint State. This is clearly a significant opportunity for advanced type collectors and early dollar enthusiasts that is sure to attract spirited bidding.
