- Tompkins Die Stage 1/3, Rea et al. Die State P. Tompkins Plate Coin. This is a generally sharply struck piece with minor, isolated peripheral softness on the obverse. That side is largely toned in deep steel-olive, both sides with mottled iridescent champagne-apricot and powder blue that provide a brighter, more vivid appearance for the reverse. Typical of the variety, the reverse is rotated clockwise from normal coin alignment, here only a few degrees.
Sharing its obverse with the 1834 B-1, the 1834 Browning-2 is the earlier of the two varieties produced. The latter shares its reverse with the 1834 B-5 and 1835 B-2 pairings. As with so many scarce varieties in the Capped Bust quarter series, the 1834 B-2 is especially difficult to locate in grades above EF, as here.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Coins from this die marriage were used in the creation of the famous King of Siam presentation set. Due to the nature of the coins included in that set, new dies were prepared for many of the coins included therein. The reverse die is another unique creation that speaks to someone besides Kneass being involved in its engraving. Again it is my contention that person may be Christian Gobrecht. A difficult variety to find in nice AU grades, I was never able to find an improvement on the PCGS AU-55 offered here.
