- Tompkins Die Stage 1/2, Rea et al. Die State b, the latter most readily attributable by evidence of gentle die swell in the right reverse field. An uncommonly well struck coin in a Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle quarter, we note particularly impressive detail on the eagle's breast and neck, which show full, crisp plumage. Softness in a few other areas is minor, especially given the presence of light high point wear that helps to define the Choice EF grade from PCGS. This coin has been cleaned at one time, the surfaces curiously glossy in texture with faint hairlines. Ample evidence of a frosty to semi-reflective finish remains, nonetheless, and the otherwise bright silver gray surfaces have started to retone in light champagne-gold iridescence that appears to drift toward the borders.<p>This is a scarce die pairing of the 1806-dated quarter issue, but even so a number of AU and even a few Mint State coins are known. The offered example from the NorthEast Collection just made it into the 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach census with a ranking of CC#7.
