FROM THE M & S PETTY COLLECTION A rare date, struck only in Proof, the 1858 is a key date from a mintage of just 300, but because they were struck only in Proof, the survival is better than those that were subject to circulation. A pleasing Choice Brilliant Proof with boldly defined devices and sleek, watery fields. Soft iridescent toning graces the surfaces, attesting to the originality. A few small hairlines are seen with the aid of a glass, but the overall eye appeal is pleasant. Ex Ira & Larry Goldberg, February 2007, lot 1612. Only 300 were struck. PCGS 33, NGC 19. The most recent example sold in August 2017 for $10,869 and the current Collectors Universe value is listed at $14,500. A popular date among collectors, we expect it to see spirited bidding.
