- A simply outstanding near-Gem example of the type and issue, this is one of the finest Capped Bust Left half eagles that your cataloger has handled in a professional numismatic career spanning 25 years. Thick, lovely mint luster remains as full and intense as the day of striking. The surfaces have a soft satin texture and also sport wonderfully original color with wisps of pinkish-rose iridescence on dominant deep honey-gold. Virtually all features are fully rendered from an expert strike, only the end of Liberty's bust and the first letter S in STATES a tad soft with a couple of faint adjustment marks (as made) in the former area. Surfaces are remarkably smooth, well composed, and very close to full Gem Mint State. BD Die State b/b.<p>There is only one die marriage known for the 1809-dated half eagle issue; the overdate status is questionable as the fragment within the lower loop of the digit 9 does not precisely match the expected shape of an 8. Nor does this variety appear to be an 1809/9 repunched date, although a misplaced 9 does seem to be the more likely candidate. The estimated mintage of this issue is 20,000 to 33,875 pieces (per John W. Dannreuther, 2006), and survivors number no more than 350 coins in all grades. The Chicago Collection specimen is virtually unimproveable and worthy of the strongest bids.
