- Chalmers shillings of the Bird type, either variety, rarely offer the combination of originality, problem free surfaces, and universally bold detail that defines this premium quality EF from the August Collection. All design elements on both sides are clear, the birds and worm scene at central reverse remarkably full. (PCGS has incorrectly mounted this coin with the reverse up in the holder.) Even the clasped hands and enclosing wreath in the center of the obverse are bold with plenty of finer detail noted. Centering is nearly perfect for the reverse, the obverse typically aligned to 4 'clock with the denticulation at right missing, extra planchet beyond the denticles at upper left. Bathed in rich steel and olive-gray patina, the discerning collector would be hard pressed to find a nicer Chalmers shilling at any grade level.<p>Chalmers, a silversmith, patriot, and Annapolis mover-and-shaker, went broke soon after his coinage was produced, became an itinerant preacher, freed his slaves, and became an outspoken advocate for the abolition of slavery. He also became a drunk and was thrown out of the Methodist Church for certain indiscretions in 1813. The Long Worm variety of his shillings is best recognized by the hedge running from N to I (as opposed to N to N for the short worm) and the decoration between ONE and SHILLING which contains no internal cross. It appears that the Long Worm shilling was struck after the Short Worms, which share a common obverse.
