- THE B.S.T. COLLECTION Tied for FINEST B-6, BB-241! This is an AMAZING GEM, a coin that would be a real prize in any set of early dollars, early type, or special "box of 20." The present coin has a bold, full luster that has a glowing satiny brilliance and soft frosted texture that both appear as the cartwheels sweep across the GEM quality surfaces. The underlying brilliance provides a wonderful backlight for the delightful, original toning in shades of iridescent apricot-rose, tangerine-gold, and pale lilac-blue pastel hues that appear over the antique pewter-silver surfaces. The devices are sharply impressed from an exacting blow from Bowers-Borckardt State III. This is a remarkable die marriage, with seven enumerated by Q. David Bowers at the MS65 level in his 2013 listing of Notable Specimens. The die marriage is identified by the obverse die which features a missing right "foot" to the T in LIBERTY. This exquisite specimen has a great look and is worthy of another world class collection. Ex Walton Hood Collection; Bowers & Merena, January 2003, lot 426; Larry H. Miller Collection; Stack's Bowers December 2020 sale of the Larry Miller Collection, Part Two, lot 1093. PCGS 4, NGC 4, CAC 3. It is interesting that three of the FINEST KNOWN examples of this die marriage sold In 2020. This coin in December at $180,000; the Stickney-Clapp-Eliasberg-Pogue-Morelan example we sold in October 2020 for $270,250; and the Simpson coin (ex T. James Clarke, Floyd T. Starr, Phillip Flannagan, Cardinal, Legend, and Bob R. Simpson), a PCGS MS65+ CAC that sold in November 2020 for $300,000. The PCGS Price Guide value is $350,000. We expect this colorful GEM example will find itself at home in a GEM early dollar date set or AMAZING type set. Good luck. Cert. Number 50027396 PCGS # 6895
