1876 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Proof-65 Cameo (NGC). Produced using the Type I Reverse hub, as is the case for all proof 1876 Seated half dollars, both of the berries on the olive branch are open (or split). The United States' Centennial in 1876 resulted in an uncommonly high mintage of 1,150 proof silver coins that year, obviously in anticipation of strong demand for numismatic keepsakes among the contemporary public. And given the scarcity of the proof 1876 Seated half dollar in the finest grades, it seems likely that many examples did initially go to noncollectors, in whose care they were mishandled, if not eventually placed into circulation.<br /> This fortunate survivor has survived the passage of time without acquiring so much as a single outwardly distracting blemish. Well mirrored fields and sharp, frosty devices are bathed in a blend of rich charcoal-olive patina.
