- Obv: The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1858 Liberty Seated quarters. Rev: The Anthony C. Paquet design. A spread-wing eagle with a shield on its breast clutches an olive branch in its right talon and a group of three arrows in its left. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR is below. This vividly toned specimen exhibits dominant reddish-apricot iridescence with glints of powder blue and antique silver at the rims. The finish is universally semi-reflective, the strike is razor sharp throughout.
The tall letters in the legend and denomination readily identifiable the reverse design as the work of Assistant Engraver Anthony C. Paquet. With only five specimens traced (per the uspatterns.com website), Judd-221 is a very rare type indeed. The offered specimen is equally well suited for inclusion in a specialized pattern cabinet or advanced collection of Liberty Seated coinage.
