- Tompkins Die Stage 5/1, Rea et al. Die State a. Vividly and beautifully toned, and also highly desirable as the finest known example of this scarce Browning number. The obverse is particularly striking in appearance with iridescent cobalt blue, deep rose and reddish-orange toning splashed across the surface. The reverse is more reserved, mostly pearl gray in appearance, but also with cobalt blue and sandy-gold iridescence here and there around the periphery. Both sides are strongly lustrous for the grade with a bright, frosty to semi-reflective finish. The strike is well executed with most features boldly to sharply defined, and both sides pleasingly smooth in-hand with no singularly troublesome marks. The eye appeal is exceptional.<p>The Browning-4 is the second rarest die marriage of the 1819 Capped Bust quarter, after B-1. The former variety represents the only use of this obverse die; the reverse of B-4 is shared with the common 1819 B-3 attribution. The NorthEast Collection specimen is ranked CC#1 as the only Mint State example of the 1819 B-4 dies in the 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach census. It is tied for CC#1 in the 2008 Tompkins census with one other Mint Stare coin from our (Stack's) January 2004 sale. This is the plate coin in both references, and it is eagerly awaiting inclusion in another advanced Bust quarter variety set, in which it will also serve as a leading highlight.
