- 1842 Liberty Head Half Eagle. Large Letters. Repunched Date. AU-53 (PCGS). CAC. Here is a noteworthy original AU example of this surprise rarity among early date Philadelphia Mint Liberty Head half eagles. Awash in rich orange-honey color, the surfaces are appreciably lustrous and well preserved despite light commercial use. The devices are impressively sharp across both sides, with pronounced repunching visible at the digit 4 in the date. The Large Letters reverse was once thought to be more common than the Small Letters variety for the 1842 half eagle, though auction data has confirmed that, in fact, the opposite is true. Typically seen in poor states of preservation and with evidence of mishandling, attractive and lustrous survivors like the present piece are truly significant finds for enthusiasts of 19th century gold.
