- 1806 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle. BD-2. Rarity-5+. Pointed Top 6, Stars 8x5. AU-58 (NGC). Considerable mint luster remains on the rich yellow gold surfaces. Nuances of deeper gold toning are noted around some of the devices, adding to the overall eye appeal of this scarce variety. A few minor marks as one would expect for the grade, but none are visually distracting in the least. No adjustment marks, planchet flakes or other mint-made imperfections that often plague these early coins. The strike shows some softness at the centers, but it seems fairly equal in this respect to the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Core Collection coin, while the Bass coin exhibits obvious adjustment marks through Liberty's portrait. While 1806 is one of the most commonly encountered dates among the early half eagles, this is due to the more common Round Top 6 variant which appeared in John Dannreuther's survey of auction appearances (1990-2005) more than three times as often than all varieties of the pointed top 6 coins combined. The Pointed Top 6 examples are scarcer as a class, and some are very rare. This one is very scarce with an estimated 30-35 coins known according to the Bass-Dannreuther reference. This obverse die was used on both BD-1, and BD-2 coins, and cracked during its first use but not extensively enough to remove it from use. The reverse of this marriage is interesting as the first one among the early half eagles to feature 13 arrows in the eagle's talon, a characteristic that continued through the end of the series.
