- Obv: William Barber's famous Sailor Head design. A bust of Liberty faces left with 13 stars arranged around the border and the date 1875 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, before which is a small ornamental spray. Rev: In the center is a shield with the numeral 20 incuse in its center. Rays, arrows and olive sprigs emanate from around the shield. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border, and the word CENTS is below. Hazy silver-tinged surfaces have been dipped at one time, but the finish remains lively enough at the Proof-63 grade level. The design elements are smartly impressed and lightly frosted, the fields semi-reflective.
Of this Judd number the uspatterns.com website states:
William Barber's sailors head design. It was also used on half eagle and eagle patterns of 1875, dollar patterns of 1876 and in 1877 on dime, quarter, half dollar and dollar patterns.
The same source accounts for approximately two dozen Sailor Head twenty-cent pieces in silver, a paltry total given the extreme popularity of this design type and the strong demand that specimens enjoy among advanced pattern enthusiasts.
