- 1855-O Liberty Double Eagle. Winter Variety One, the only known dies. AU-53 (NGC). 1873-CC Liberty Double Eagle. Winter 1-A. AU-55 (PCGS). The 1855-O dominates the second rarity tier in the New Orleans Mint double eagle series. It is not in the same league as the legendary 1854-O and 1856-O -- which are in a class unto themselves -- but it easily outranks the 1859-O and 1860-O in rarity, as well as all other O-mint twenty-dollar gold issues. A mere 8,000 pieces were produced, and Doug Winter (<em>Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909</em>, 2006 edition) accounts for a mere 70-80 survivors in all grades.<br /> Surpassing in certified grade the typically offered VF or EF survivor, this well struck example retains impressive sharpness of detail to most areas. Light wear is largely confined to the higher elements of the design, and a bit of scuffiness to the surfaces is also commensurate with the assigned grade for a large size O-mint gold coin. Pale, even, honey-rose color with flickers of softly frosted luster still clinging to the protected areas around the peripheral devices.
