- 1860 Pattern Half Eagle. Judd-272, Pollock-320. Rarity-6. Proof-64 (NGC). A majestic design by Longacre on the obverse with a bust of Liberty facing right wearing large handled cap on which three stars are mounted. Her carefully curling hair rolls down her head to her shoulder, where a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY drapes her shoulder to the back of her head. Date below and thirteen stars surround. Reverse design by Paquet with a delicate eagle facing left, in its beak is a ribbon inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM, the left claw holds three arrows, in the right an olive branch. A stylized shied covers the eagle's breast with curving horizontal lines that imply greater depth to the design. Furthermore, the eagle's tail extends left and the outstretched wings reach well out into the fields. Surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and FIVE DOLLARS below all in small, carefully defined lettering.
The surfaces are quite smooth with faint traces of haze and shallow random hairlines. In terms of quality NGC has graded three examples of this pattern issue with the gilt surface as follows, PR-61, 62 and the present coin as PR-64, clearly the finest seen. A handful of others exist in their original copper presentation without the gilt surface. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, gilt.
