FROM THE M & S PETTY COLLECTION Very, very CHOICE! This Civil War date is always popular, and it is remarkable that a silver dollar could survive in this high grade being struck during the Civil War. While it is often told that the tumult led to mass hoarding of gold and silver coinage, a silver dollar represented a lot of money: a Union enlisted volunteer was paid $13 a month for their enlistment term. The M & S Petty MS64 is boldly eye appealing. A wonderful luster has a satiny brilliance and semi-reflective flash that comes out as you rotate the surfaces in a light. Die lines and striations are seen as are some light ticks that account for the assigned grade, but they have minimal impact on the outstanding eye appeal. A blush of the faintest pale gold and pearly silver iridescence adds to the fantastic visual allure! PCGS 23, NGC 16. The most recent example realized $10,281 in our January 2020 Regency Auction (was CAC approved). Prior to that, none had sold since 2017. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $17,500 and we think this impressive coin has a better eye appeal than the CAC coin we sold two years ago. RARE finer, with just eight graded higher at PCGS and the value jumps to $25,000 in 64+. Good luck! Cert. Number 45114113 PCGS # 6951
