- Frosty orange-brown surfaces exhibit soft underlying luster in the protected areas. The centering is perfect and the surfaces are unmarked to the unassisted eye. Choice for the grade both physically and aesthetically, it is difficult for us to imagine a more appealing example of both the type and variety without advancing far up into the Mint State portion of the grading scale.<p>Generally considered to have their origins circa 1672 to 1694 (certain thin planchet Elephant tokens are known on cut-down pattern British pennies circa 1672), though many collectors and references cling tenaciously to 1694 as the solitary date of issue. The Hodder 2-B thick planchet is the most frequently encountered London Elephant in today's market. Examples certainly aren't rare, or even particularly rare in Choice AU and Mint State, but with its superior quality and eye appeal the present example has more to offer even than many Uncirculated pieces we have handled through the years. Worthy of a strong premium.
