- 1879 Pattern Metric Dollar. Judd-1617, Pollock-1813. Rarity-4. Proof-61 (NGC). Undated (1857) Pattern Half Dollar Uniface Reverse Die Trial. Judd-A1857-2, Pollock-3134. Unique. Genuine--Code 98, Surface Damage (PCGS). Designed by William Barber, the obverse exhibits a left facing head of Liberty as the central device. The Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is above, the date 1879 is below and 13 stars are arranged around the border seven left, six right. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse exhibits the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the upper border and the denomination ONE DOLLAR at the lower border. Inside those devices are a wreath of corn and cotton, then a beaded circle, then the inscriptions 895.8 S. / 4.2 - G. / 100 - C. / 25 GRAMS. An ornamental cartouche above the wreath is inscribed with the Latin motto DEO EST GLORIA. Struck in silver (presumably goloid metric alloy as standard silver alloy for this type is attributed as Judd-1618) with a reeded edge.<br /> Crisply delineated features are bathed in a blend of steel-rose and golden-olive patina that allows areas of silvery near brilliance to shine forth in and around the centers. Light hairlining and a muted sheen explain the Proof-61 designation from NGC.
