- 1972 United States Assay Commission Medal. Bronze. 57 mm. By Frank Gasparro and Sherl J. Winter. JK AC-116a. Rarity-7. MS-66 (NGC).
Richly original sandy-tan patina is displayed on both sides of this attractive and smooth-looking Gem.
The obverse of the 1972 Assay Commission medal features a portrait of Treasury Secretary John B. Connally, while the reverse displays the U.S. Treasury building. Connally was in the open car with John F. Kennedy when the president was assassinated on November 22, 1963. Later his fortunes declined drastically after the Internal Revenue Service seized his assets for forced sale at public auction. The 1972 Assay Commission included such numismatists as Sol Kaplan, Richard B. Dusterberg and Col. Robert J. Kriz. The medals are rare, as are those from most modern Assay meetings.
This lot includes the original case for the medal, Extremely Fine with light to moderate scuffing and other signs of minor handling on the outside. (Total: 1 medal; 1 case)
Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of September 2006, lot 6623. Collector tag with attribution notation included.
