- 1863 Pattern Indian Cent. Judd-302, Pollock-365. Rarity-7+. Proof-64 (PCGS). CAC. Copper-nickel. Plain edge. From the regular-issue dies that were adopted in 1864 for the bronze cent issues with the L for James Barton Longacre on the ribbon behind the Native American's neck. Lustrous pale gold with satiny fields and modestly frosted motifs. Pale rose and sky blue iridescence adds greatly to the overall appeal, especially on the reverse. Tiny flecks are noted under low magnification. One of just three examples of Judd-302 certified by PCGS. The uspatterns.com website notes that about a half dozen examples are known, and states the following: ""These are actually restrikes using a reverse die from 1871,"" per Richard Snow. An important rarity that will no doubt see bidding pressure from pattern aficionados as well as advanced students of the Indian cent series.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
Many years ago, indeed in the late 1950s, in Empire Topics, a magazine issued by Empire Coin Company (conducted by Jim Ruddy and myself), I included an article, “Transitional Patterns of the United States.” This dealt with patterns made of designs that later were adopted for regular use. Since that time, studies have expanded, and patterns, no longer an obscure specialty as it was then, have become widely collected. Fine friend Saul Teichman, who conducts the website mentioned above, has done a great deal to further the gathering and dissemination of information regarding patterns coins. Andrew W. Pollock III, who has worked with us in cataloging and research for many years, has done likewise, and the latest (tenth edition) of United States Patterns, by Dr. J. Hewitt Judd, has further spread the word. Richard Snow, quoted above, discovered that in 1871 various restrikes were made of earlier proofs. It is my belief that in 1863 no cents with an L on the ribbon were produced at all.
